The Foster Village That Took Christian Bale 18 Years to Build

Eighteen years ago, Christian Bale started dreaming about a place where siblings in foster care wouldn't have to lose each other along with everything else. This week, that place opened. Together California's first foster care village held its ribbon-cutting in Palmdale: twelve furnished homes across six duplexes, each built to house sibling groups of up to six kids, with a shared community garden and a full-time trained foster parent in every home.

Bale, who financed the $22 million project with community leaders and Dr. Eric Esrailian, said the reasoning was simple: "If you've got a heart, little human beings need help. They're alone in the world." Asked whether playing Batman had anything to do with it, he laughed and admitted he hadn't even clocked the connection until years into the project: "It wasn't until a few years after I started this that I realized Bruce Wayne started an orphanage at the end of the movies."

It's not a movie ending. It's twelve houses and a garden, built slowly, for kids who just need to stay together.

The Feather That Explains Why Birds Survived the Asteroid

In Montana, a researcher named David DeMar was crawling up a rocky outcrop looking for fish fossils when a golf-ball-sized nodule caught his eye. It turned out to be 66-million-year-old dinosaur dung, and inside it was the best-preserved feather ever recovered from the age of dinosaurs 4.

Something, probably a T. rex or its smaller cousin Nanotyrannus, had eaten a bird, and that bird's plumage survived the digestive trip. Paleontologist Jingmai O'Connor of Chicago's Field Museum, who led the study published in Current Biology, says the feather belonged to a more primitive, less insulated kind of bird than the ones that made it through the mass extinction. The lineage that did survive, Neornithes, is the ancestor of every bird alive today, and this fossil suggests better insulation may have been the difference between freezing in an impact winter and living to raise chicks in it.

The Sleep Disorder That Dogs Helped Scientists Solve

In 1999, two scientists working independently figured out what a brain chemical called orexin actually does, and this year they shared the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award for it 28.

Dr. Emmanuel Mignot, now director of the Stanford Center for Narcolepsy, got there by studying narcoleptic dogs, including his own Chihuahua, Watson, who has the condition. Orexin, it turns out, is the chemical that keeps you awake, the mirror image of melatonin easing you toward sleep. Mignot told Live Science he was drawn to narcolepsy because it affects roughly 1 in 3,000 people yet almost no neurologist had ever knowingly seen a case: "I would talk to neurologists and they'd say, 'Oh, I've never seen one case in my entire life.' So I would say, 'Yes, of course; you miss them all.'" The discovery has since led directly to new drugs for insomnia and narcolepsy.

The Animal That Keeps Repairing Its Broken DNA, Generation After Generation

Bdelloid rotifers already had a reputation for toughness: these microscopic animals, which live in mosses and lichens, can dry out completely and revive when water returns, and survive radiation doses that would kill a person outright.

But one species, Adineta vaga, does something evolutionary biologist Karine Van Doninck says has never been documented in any organism before, not even in tardigrades 66. After radiation shattered its chromosomes, the rotifer reproduced anyway, without fully repairing the damage first, and its offspring inherited the broken pieces and kept fixing them across generations. Researchers noticed the anomaly almost by accident: clones from a single irradiated egg should have shown identical damage, but instead the deletions varied and seemed to be shrinking over time. "It suggested a progressive repair, and we thought that's impossible," Van Doninck said. They checked and rechecked the sequencing before accepting what was actually happening.

The First Muscle-Targeting Drug for a Disease That Steals Movement

The FDA approved Isembyld this week, the first therapy built specifically to target muscle loss in spinal muscular atrophy, for patients 2 and older who are already on standard SMA treatment 85.

In the late-stage trial, children who took it alongside their existing medication kept improving their motor skills over a year, while children on placebo declined. Scholar Rock's approach blocks myostatin, a protein that normally limits muscle growth, an idea the industry had chased for years without a working drug. "After decades of failed industry-wide efforts to unlock the potential of myostatin inhibition, Scholar Rock has delivered a therapeutic breakthrough," said CEO David Hallal.

Even Four-Year-Olds Will Work Harder for Something That Lasts

A study in Psychological Science found that the drive to feel like your actions matter shows up by age four, and it takes almost nothing to activate it 102. Researchers led by Yilin Liu and Fan Yang gave children and adults a choice between an easy task and a harder, more productive one, and the single variable that swayed people toward the harder task was knowing the thing they made would be kept rather than discarded, even something as small as a piece of children's artwork.

"We were interested in a more basic question: how much meaning does something actually need to have before it starts to matter for motivation?" Liu told PsyPost. It did, in both kids and adults, suggesting the need to leave some small mark on the world isn't a grown-up idea we learn later. It's there almost from the start.

A California City Cut Gun Violence by 61 Percent, and the Program That Did It Just Got Its Long-Term Proof

A UC Berkeley study published in JAMA Network Open found that Richmond, California's Office of Neighborhood Safety was responsible for a 61% reduction in firearm homicides and injury shootings over 14 years, one of the only studies in the country to track a community violence program's citywide impact for more than a decade 97.

The city's Operation Peacemaker Fellowship, started in 2010, pairs 14 street-outreach workers with 123 active participants, mentoring people at the highest risk of shooting or being shot rather than waiting for police to make an arrest. Researchers compared Richmond's actual trajectory against a model built from dozens of similar U.S. cities to estimate what would have happened without the program, and the gap held up even as Richmond's police force shrank from over 300 officers in 2014 to 121 by 2024. One former fellowship participant put it plainly: "Before the ONS came to me, I didn't care if I survived past 19."

How Much Suffering Is in a Single Bite, and Why Small Animals Carry Most of It

A new analysis from researcher Chris Bryant and the animal welfare group Faunalytics tried to answer a question that had never been quantified cleanly: how much suffering is packed into a pound of chicken versus a pound of beef 126.

The math is stark once you see it. A family eating a rotisserie chicken consumes roughly one whole bird, while a family eating a steak dinner consumes about half a percent of one cow, so a diet built around small animals like chickens and farmed fish requires killing far more individual creatures, and typically under harsher conditions, than the same amount of meat from cattle. Faunalytics research director Allison Troy said the team wanted to build something like a carbon footprint calculator, but for suffering: "We felt like there was a gap in terms of thinking about more of a 'suffering footprint.'"

Europe's First Fully Commercial Rocket Reached Orbit

Isar Aerospace, founded in 2018 by three students at a German university, put its Spectrum rocket into low-Earth orbit from a spaceport inside Norway's Arctic Circle, becoming the first fully commercial launch vehicle built in Europe to reach orbit 157.

It took the company eight years and roughly $1 billion in private financing to get there, on just its second launch attempt, after its first ended in failure. The mission carried a batch of CubeSats, and satellite operators like Japan's Astroscale had already signed launch contracts with Isar before it ever reached orbit, a bet on an unproven rocket that paid off 146.
