Eighteen-year-old Marcel Ravidat followed his dog to a hole in the woods near Montignac, France, and found a cave covered in art made some 17,000 years ago. The horses, deer, and bulls on its walls are among the finest Ice Age paintings ever discovered. They gave us a vivid link to the minds of our distant ancestors.

At Texas Instruments, Jack Kilby showed his managers a sliver of germanium that held a complete working circuit, the first integrated chip. A steady wave on an oscilloscope proved that many components could live on one piece of material. That idea became the microchip inside every modern device.
