The first spacecraft reaches the Moon
The Soviet probe Luna 2 crashed into the Moon as planned, becoming the first human-made object to reach the surface of another world. It carried no camera, but its arrival proved a craft could be aimed across a quarter million miles of space and hit its mark. The Moon was suddenly within reach.
