The gut sends a real-time memory signal to the brain
Researchers are finding that the gut sends signals through the vagus nerve that shape which experiences the brain converts into memory, not just hunger or fullness. The stakes are whether this gut-to-brain memory pathway operates in humans and could explain why some meals and experiences stick in memory while others do not.

Scott Kanoski's lab at USC found that a nutrient-rich meal triggered a surge of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain record new information, in neurons wired to the hippocampus in rats, and that surge vanished when researchers cut the vagus nerve running from gut to brain. Sugar water that tasted just as sweet but carried no real nutrition produced no such surge, and rats with a cut vagus nerve also got worse at remembering where they had just found food.
