A paralyzed man can feel his dog's fur again
In the summer of 2020, Keith Thomas dove into a pool the way he always did and broke his neck at the bottom of it, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down 209. Three months later, the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research asked if he'd join a trial for something called a double neural bypass: electrodes in his brain read his intention to move, a computer routes that signal past his damaged spine straight to his arms, and sensors in his fingers send feeling back the other way, so he can tell a coffee cup from an egg by touch.
After 35 weeks of training, the strength in his right arm is up 86 percent, his left arm 62 percent. He can scratch his nose now. He can wipe his mouth. He can scratch behind his dog's ears and feel the fur under his fingers, and some of that function has stuck around even with the computer switched off. The work was published in Nature.
