A 14-year-old noticed something was wrong, and it saved a woman's life

Fourteen-year-old Royal Cothrun was riding his bike through Gilbert, Arizona, on an ordinary afternoon when the heat index was pushing past 103 degrees. He noticed a 75-year-old woman named Theresa Morgan wandering the sidewalk, a grocery bag in one arm, her purse in the other, clearly disoriented. Instead of riding past, he stopped and talked to her.

Morgan had been diagnosed with dementia the year before and had gotten confused trying to walk home from the store. Royal saw she was sweating hard, got her into the shade, and gently helped her remember her son's phone number so he could call for help. Paramedics arrived and treated her for heat exhaustion before it became something worse.

"It was just so lucky, so fortunate, that he ran across her, cared enough to stay with her, and take care of her," her son Jeff said afterward. Royal's own explanation was simpler: "Go with your gut." A fire captain who responded to the call put it plainly, the outcome would likely have been far worse without him. Sometimes the whole difference between a bad afternoon and a tragedy is one kid deciding to stop.

A paralyzed man can feel his dog's fur again

In the summer of 2020, Keith Thomas dove into a pool the way he always did and broke his neck at the bottom of it, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down 209. Three months later, the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research asked if he'd join a trial for something called a double neural bypass: electrodes in his brain read his intention to move, a computer routes that signal past his damaged spine straight to his arms, and sensors in his fingers send feeling back the other way, so he can tell a coffee cup from an egg by touch.

After 35 weeks of training, the strength in his right arm is up 86 percent, his left arm 62 percent. He can scratch his nose now. He can wipe his mouth. He can scratch behind his dog's ears and feel the fur under his fingers, and some of that function has stuck around even with the computer switched off. The work was published in Nature.

Mice that eat poison to survive on frozen volcano summits

In 2020, biologist Jay Storz climbed to the 22,110-foot summit of Llullaillaco, the world's highest dormant volcano, and found Andean leaf-eared mice living there, more than a mile above the highest human settlement on Earth 13.

Before that, scientists assumed no mammal could survive above roughly 18,000 feet. Storz and his team have spent three years since, from 2020 to 2023, trapping and studying the same species, Phyllotis vaccarum, at low, middle, and summit elevations, and their results, published July 9 in Science, show the mice have picked up an unusual trick: they eat desert plants that would poison almost anything else, in an environment so thin and cold that even an acclimatized mountaineer can only tolerate it briefly. One of Storz's own colleagues needed emergency evacuation for altitude sickness during a related expedition.

Orcas team up to smash sunfish into pieces, maybe for the fun of it

In the Gulf of California, marine biologists have now documented orcas doing something nobody had described before: one orca holds a sharptail mola, or giant sunfish, in place while another swims off, builds up speed, and rams it hard enough to shatter the carcass into fragments 68.

It's happened at least three times since the behavior was first filmed in December 2021, most recently in 2024 and 2025, and the pattern is oddly consistent. Careful review of the footage showed the sunfish were already dead, their nutrient-rich organs already removed, before the ramming even started, so this isn't a killing blow. It looks more like violent, practiced butchery, breaking apart a carcass whose skin is famously too tough to simply peel 68. Afterward, a juvenile orca moved in to eat the smaller pieces.

Bringing the American chestnut back after a century-long fight

Before a fungal blight arrived from Asia in 1904 and started killing trees at the Bronx Zoo, the American chestnut was one of the great trees of Appalachian forests, sometimes 150 feet tall, feeding wildlife and Indigenous peoples and settlers alike with its nuts 138.

Within decades the blight had wiped out nearly every mature tree from Maine to Mississippi. For a century, breeders have crossed American chestnuts with blight-resistant Asian ones, and for about 20 years a single inserted wheat gene, nicknamed OXO, looked like it might make the trees fully blight-resistant on its own. Recent field results show that approach underperforming. So researchers, drawing on decades of progress in reading the tree's full genome, are now designing new genetic strategies rather than betting on one gene.

A "cochlear implant for vision" just cleared Europe

Science Corporation announced this week that European regulators approved commercial sale of its retinal implant, a device for people who've lost their central vision to age-related macular degeneration 86.

Company founder Max Hodak's own summary is blunt and telling: "We have a cochlear implant for vision now." The device restores enough central sight that patients can read books and make out road signs again, and the company expects a US launch as soon as 2027.

Women biologists just overtook men on Wikipedia

A new study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, led by biology professor David Alvarez-Ponce at the University of Nevada, Reno, found that female biology professors at top US universities are now more likely to have a Wikipedia biography than their male colleagues, a full reversal of the historical pattern 94.

Earlier studies of sociology, economics, and physics found male academics roughly twice as likely to have a page. Volunteer projects like Women in Red and Women Scientists, formed specifically to close that gap, get real credit here. As a reminder of how recent this shift is: Donna Strickland didn't have a Wikipedia page in 2018, the year she won the Nobel Prize in Physics, because an editor had previously ruled her work not notable enough.

Growing real dairy protein inside oat plants, no cow required

Israeli startup Plantopia has raised $9 million, led by dairy giant Schreiber Foods itself, to build a facility growing casein, the protein that makes cheese melt, stretch, and brown, directly inside sprouted oats on vertical farms 190.

Using molecular farming, plant cells rather than animal or microbial ones, the company says it has successfully expressed all four forms of casein found in cow's milk and matched its coagulation behavior, at a price point of $15 to $20 per kilogram, on par with the conventional dairy version. Production starts this quarter at a facility in Kibbutz Sdot Yam.

The EU just made it illegal to burn unsold clothes

As of this week, large fashion companies in the EU, those with more than 250 employees and roughly $55 million or more in annual revenue, can no longer legally destroy unsold clothing, shoes, or accessories 227.

Instead they have to mark it down, sell it through other channels, or donate it, with narrow exceptions for goods that are unsafe, counterfeit, or too damaged to use. They also have to publish an annual public report on anything they do discard, and keep those records for five years. The European Environment Agency estimates 4 to 9 percent of unsold textiles in the EU were being destroyed every year before this.
