The man who shows up twice a week to hold the smallest patients

Twice a week for the last eight years, 73-year-old Dave Whitlow has put on a gown and gloves, left his phone at the door, and walked into the neonatal intensive care unit at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. He's not a doctor or a nurse. He's a volunteer cuddler, and on a typical visit he holds five or six premature and critically ill babies, some weighing less than two pounds, against his chest.

Before he picks up a single infant, he checks in with the nurses on that baby's condition, watches the monitors the whole time he's holding them, and adjusts his position if the oxygen numbers dip. Whitlow spent more than 40 years as a local government manager before he retired, and he says this second act found him almost by accident. "It just feels right," he says.

Every visit ends the same way. Before he sets a baby back down, he leans in close and says the same four words, quietly, every time: "Grow strong, grow smart, grow kind." It's what he wants for every child he meets, and after eight years and thousands of tiny visitors, he says the NICU has become a family he never expected to find.

Why Alzheimer's steals sleep, and how scientists gave it back

For years the assumption was that Alzheimer's steals sleep because the plaques themselves get in the way, or because the neurons around them are too damaged to keep a normal rhythm.

A University of Kentucky team led by Shannon Macauley and Nicholas Constantino found something different 4. In mice with amyloid plaques, it isn't the plaques doing the damage directly, it's the brain's own cleanup crew. Microglia, the immune cells that swarm in to handle the plaques, kick off a wave of inflammation so broad that Macauley compares it to a kitchen fire triggering the whole house's sprinkler system. When the researchers used a drug to temporarily clear out most of the microglia, the mice got back more than two hours of sleep a day, deep, slow-wave sleep, the kind that actually restores the brain, even though the plaques never budged.

A laptop just solved a problem someone insisted needed a quantum computer

Last year, a team claimed to have used a quantum computer to model the behavior of hundreds of entangled qubits in a way no ordinary computer could touch. Joseph Tindall and Miles Stoudenmire, physicists at the Simons Foundation's Flatiron Institute, were skeptical in the specific way physicists get skeptical: "did you try this? did you try that?" 2 So they tried it.

Using tensor networks, a mathematical trick for compressing an otherwise impossibly complicated wave function, they reproduced the same results on modest hardware, some of the calculations ran on a personal laptop, and their answers matched both the theoretical predictions and the quantum computer's own output. The paper landed in Science.

Why one female naked mole rat runs the whole colony

In a naked mole rat colony, only the queen reproduces, and every other female stays in a kind of permanent, hormone-suppressed adolescence for as long as she's on the throne.

Nobody knew how one animal enforced that on dozens of others until now 21. Researchers found the queen produces a compound called isopropyl myristate, the same ingredient found in a lot of skincare products, and just the smell of it is enough to keep the other females' hormones locked down, even when the queen herself isn't physically present. Behavioral scientist Melissa Holmes called it the solution to a "longstanding mystery."

A ten-minute conversation changes minds more than anyone expects

Michael Kardas at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and his team paired up strangers in the US and UK and had them talk for ten minutes about something they disagreed on, sometimes trivial (cats versus dogs), sometimes not (whether cancel culture is good) 103.

Before the conversation, people predicted almost nothing would change, that they'd stay put and so would the other person. They were wrong on both counts. Views shifted more than participants expected, on both sides, and the conversations measurably reduced polarization, even on the political topics. A week later, the effect had faded slightly but was still there, and people whose views changed the most right after the conversation were the most likely to stay changed.

The Great Lakes cleanup that both parties keep protecting

Since 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has funneled more than $5 billion into cleaning up the lakes that hold about a fifth of the world's available surface fresh water and supply drinking water to over 40 million people 153.

It's funded more than 8,000 individual projects: decontaminating toxic sites, fighting invasive species, restoring habitat. And it has survived repeated attempts to cut or kill it, in a political era where almost nothing survives repeated attempts to cut it. Researcher Elizabeth Buchner and a team of graduate students studied why, and found it comes down to a deep, shared regional attachment. As Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga put it this July: "The Great Lakes aren't a Republican issue or a Democratic issue. They're an economic engine, a source of drinking water for millions of people, and part of our way of life."

Getting to orbit now costs a fraction of what it did, and it's still falling

In 1960, launching a kilogram of anything into orbit cost more than $87,000 in today's dollars. By 2025 that had fallen 96 percent, to $3,868 204.

A University of Cambridge team led by Alessio Terzi pulled together data on more than 4,400 launches across 65 years and 330-plus rocket designs and found the trend follows Wright's Law almost perfectly: every time cumulative payload sent to orbit doubles, cost per kilogram drops by 21.2 percent. Extrapolate that curve and launch could cost $1,569 per kilogram by 2030 and just $273 by 2040.

A tree that survived one of America's worst extinctions is coming back

The American chestnut once numbered in the billions before a fungal blight introduced from East Asia in the early 1900s wiped out nearly all of them. A biotech startup called SilvaBio, co-founded by Andrew Serazin, is now breeding blight-tolerant chestnuts using genomic prediction to identify resilient seedlings early and a "speed-breeding" process that compresses a normal ten-year breeding cycle down to about one year 232.

Building on a gene originally developed at SUNY's College of Environmental Science and Forestry, a double-blinded trial of their cultivar, called Darling54, found blight damage was "orders of magnitude" smaller than in ordinary chestnuts.

China's electric car boom is also a public health story

In 2010, Beijing's smog was bad enough that the US Embassy famously called the air quality "crazy bad," and Chinese researchers linked air pollution to more than 1.2 million premature deaths that year alone 237.

Today Beijing has dropped to 589th globally in air pollution ranking despite being the world's fifth most populous city, and PM2.5 levels in the city fell 48 percent between 2010 and 2024, the steepest drop of any city studied. A big driver, according to a May study in Nature Health using satellite data and machine learning across 150 Chinese cities, is the country's shift to electric vehicles: more than half of all cars sold in China in 2025 were electric, and the researchers tie that shift to hundreds of thousands of prevented deaths.
