Congress passes its biggest housing law in 30 years
The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, signed into law July 11, is the first major federal housing legislation in about 30 years and is built on the idea that scarce housing quietly drives inequality, slow growth and even falling fertility. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act became law on July 11 after passing the Senate 85-5 and the House 358-32, the first major federal housing legislation in about 30 years. One estimate holds that building restrictions in New York, San Francisco and San Jose alone cost the US economy $8,775 per worker a year, while a record 22.6 million renter households, half of all renters, spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing.
