Stanford researchers traced age-related cartilage loss to a single enzyme, 15-PGDH, and found that blocking it regrew worn cartilage in old mice and prevented arthritis entirely in young mice given the mouse equivalent of a torn ACL. A University of Colorado Boulder team separately reported an injection that returned arthritic animal joints to a healthy state within four to eight weeks. No person has been treated, and the enzyme is active body-wide, so safety is unsettled.

A University of Colorado Boulder team led by Stephanie Bryant reported a regenerative injection that returned arthritic joints in animals to a healthy state within four to eight weeks, and a separate biomaterial repair kit, injected arthroscopically, that produced what Bryant called full regeneration and repair when used to patch cartilage or bone defects.
