Neptune's big moon Triton is found
Just seventeen days after Neptune itself was discovered, the English astronomer William Lassell spotted a large moon circling it, later named Triton. It turned out to be one of the strangest moons in the solar system, orbiting backward and, we would learn much later, spouting geysers of nitrogen from a frozen surface.
