Apollo flies its first crew
Apollo 7 lifted off from Cape Kennedy carrying Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, and Walter Cunningham, the first crewed flight of the Apollo program. Over 11 days they put the new spacecraft through its paces in Earth orbit. Their success cleared the way to aim for the Moon.
