Thomas Hunt Morgan, who proved that genes ride on chromosomes, was born in Lexington, Kentucky. His experiments with fruit flies showed how traits pass from parent to offspring and where heredity physically lives. His lab turned genetics into a precise, experimental science.

1890
President Benjamin Harrison signed the law creating Sequoia National Park, guarding the giant trees of California's Sierra Nevada from the saw. It was the second national park in the United States. Its groves hold some of the largest living things on Earth, now safe for good.
