  1. 1852

    The first powered flight takes to the air

    Henri Giffard flew a steam-powered airship 17 miles from Paris to Élancourt, the first powered and controlled flight in history. His craft was slow, but for the first time a machine carried a person through the air under its own power. It was an early step toward the age of flight.
