A direct line to head off nuclear war
The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to set up a direct communication link between their leaders, the famous hotline, after the Cuban Missile Crisis showed how easily a misunderstanding could turn to disaster. It gave the two rivals a way to talk in a hurry and cool a crisis.
