The first stored-program computer runs
The Manchester Baby ran its first program, the first computer to carry out software held in electronic memory, the way every computer works today. It ran for only a moment, but it proved the idea that made modern computing possible.
SpaceShipOne, a small rocket plane built by a private company, carried pilot Mike Melvill just past the edge of space and back. It was the first crewed spaceflight paid for without government money, opening a path toward commercial space travel.
