Freedom reaches the last enslaved Americans
Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people there were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The day became Juneteenth, now a national holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States.
