A study published in The Lancet Public Health tracked lung function in 3,414 school children aged six to nine, about half in central London's Ultra Low Emission Zone and half in Luton, and found children in the zone had measurably better lung growth trajectories five years after the policy cut roadside nitrogen dioxide by 54 percent, the first evidence anywhere that a clean air zone changes childhood lung development.
