    Karl Benz patents his first engine

    On the last day of the year, Karl Benz filed a patent in Mannheim for a reliable two-stroke gasoline engine, the breakthrough that finally gave him a working motor to build on. Within a few years he would wrap that engine in a light carriage and produce the first practical automobile.
