    Tu Youyou is born

    Tu Youyou was born in eastern China. Searching through old texts of traditional medicine, she found a clue that led her to artemisinin, a compound from sweet wormwood that became the most effective malaria drug in the world. It has saved millions of lives, and in 2015 it won her a Nobel Prize.
