Ceres, the first asteroid, is spotted
From his observatory in Palermo, Sicily, Giuseppe Piazzi noticed a faint point of light that shifted night after night and tracked the first known object in the asteroid belt. Ceres is now classed as a dwarf planet. The find revealed a whole new family of small worlds between Mars and Jupiter.
On New Year's Day, President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation came into force, declaring enslaved people in the rebelling Southern states to be free. It changed the meaning of the Civil War and set the country on the road to ending slavery for good.
