The first spacecraft flies by the Moon
The Soviet Union launched Luna 1, the first craft to break free of Earth and reach the Moon's neighborhood. It was meant to strike the surface and sailed past instead, settling into orbit around the Sun, the first object ever to do so. It proved the Moon was truly within reach.
