    The United Nations is born

    The charter of the United Nations came into force, creating a place where nations could meet to keep the peace after a devastating war. Fifty-one countries signed on as founding members. The date is marked each year as United Nations Day.

  2. 1946

    Earth is photographed from space

    A captured V-2 rocket rose 65 miles above New Mexico, and its small camera caught the first photograph of Earth from space, a grainy view of cloud and desert below. Until then, no one had seen our planet set against the black of space. It was an early glimpse of the view that would later change how we see home.
