NASA opens for business
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration began operations, bringing the country's civilian space work under one roof. Created in the wake of Sputnik, the young agency would land people on the Moon within 11 years. It went on to send robots across the solar system.
The North American Vegetarian Society founded World Vegetarian Day, an annual celebration of eating without meat held each October 1. The International Vegetarian Union endorsed it the following year. It gave a growing movement a yearly moment to share its message.
