The first protease inhibitor for HIV is approved
American regulators approved saquinavir, the first of a new kind of HIV drug called protease inhibitors. Combined with other drugs soon after, they turned HIV from a near-certain death sentence into a condition many people could live with for decades. AIDS deaths began to fall fast.
