   Werner Heisenberg, architect of quantum mechanics, is born

   Werner Heisenberg was born in Wurzburg, Germany. Still in his twenties, he helped build quantum mechanics and set out the uncertainty principle, the idea that there is a hard limit to how precisely we can know a particle's position and motion at the same time.

2. 2022

   Fusion gives back more energy than it took in

   At the National Ignition Facility in California, 192 lasers crushed a tiny fuel capsule and, for the first time, a controlled fusion reaction released more energy than the lasers delivered to it. It was a long-awaited step toward the clean, abundant power that fuses inside the Sun.
