Howard Carter opens Tutankhamun's tomb
By candlelight, the archaeologist Howard Carter cut a small hole in a sealed doorway in Egypt's Valley of the Kings and looked into the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamun. Asked if he could see anything, he answered that he could see wonderful things. The nearly untouched tomb opened a rare window on the ancient world.
