    The first airmail flight across the Pacific

    A flying boat called the China Clipper lifted off from San Francisco Bay and set out across the Pacific with a load of mail, the first scheduled air service to span that ocean. A crossing that took weeks by ship now took days. It stitched America to Asia by air for the first time.
