The Holland Tunnel opens under the Hudson
The Holland Tunnel opened, carrying cars beneath the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York, the first tunnel of its kind. Its real breakthrough was hidden: a ventilation system of giant fans that swept out exhaust fumes, solving the problem that had made long car tunnels deadly. Engineers copied it worldwide.
