    The inventor of basketball is born

    James Naismith was born in Canada. Asked to invent an indoor game to keep restless students busy through a cold New England winter, he nailed a peach basket to a gym balcony and wrote thirteen simple rules. Basketball grew from that afternoon into a game played by hundreds of millions around the world.
