Computer scientist Scott Fahlman suggested that the marks :-) and :-( could flag jokes and serious notes on a Carnegie Mellon message board. His small idea spread across the early internet and gave plain text a way to carry a tone of voice. Billions of emoji trace back to that morning post.
Two hikers in the Ötztal Alps found a body melting out of a glacier on the Austrian and Italian border. It turned out to be a man who died about 5,300 years ago, preserved whole with his clothes, tools, and last meal. He became the most closely studied ancient human ever found.
