The first solar flare is seen
Just before noon, English astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson independently watched a burst of white light erupt on the face of the Sun, the first solar flare ever recorded. About a day later a great geomagnetic storm set telegraph wires sparking and lit auroras around the world. It began the study of how the Sun's weather reaches the Earth.
After a week of scanning the North Atlantic seabed, a joint French and American team led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel spotted the Titanic's boiler more than two miles down. The discovery came 73 years after the ship sank. It showed how far deep-sea robots and cameras could now see, and gave researchers a site they could finally study.
