    The first hydrogen balloon flies

    In Paris, Jacques Charles and the Robert brothers launched the world's first hydrogen-filled balloon, which rose over the Champ de Mars and drifted for miles. It showed that a lighter gas could carry flight higher and farther than hot air alone.
