    The first close-up photos of another planet

    NASA's Mariner 4 flew past Mars and returned the first close-up photographs ever taken of another planet. The grainy images gave humanity its first real look at the Martian surface.

    New Horizons reaches Pluto

    After a nine-year journey, NASA's New Horizons probe flew past Pluto and sent home the first detailed pictures of the distant world. It completed the first survey of every classical planet in our solar system.
