    One of the first open-heart surgeries

    Surgeon Daniel Hale Williams repaired the torn sac around a stabbing victim's heart in Chicago, one of the earliest successful heart operations. The patient recovered and lived for years afterward.

    Telstar beams the first live TV across the ocean

    NASA launched Telstar 1, the satellite that relayed the first live television pictures between America and Europe. It shrank the world by making instant transatlantic broadcasts possible.
