Ancient Rome opens a new aqueduct
The emperor Trajan opened the Aqua Traiana, an aqueduct that carried clean water dozens of miles from a lake into Rome, feeding public fountains, baths, and mills. Bringing a city fresh running water was one of the ancient world's great public-health achievements, and parts of the line were used for centuries after.
