The first mission to an asteroid sets off
NASA launched NEAR Shoemaker toward the asteroid Eros, the first craft sent to orbit an asteroid and, later, to land on one. Getting close to these leftover chunks from the birth of the planets is how we learn what the young solar system was made of.
