    Charles Babbage, who imagined the computer, is born

    Charles Babbage was born in London, a mathematician frustrated by the mistakes in printed tables of numbers. His designs for the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine set out, in brass and gears, nearly every idea at the heart of the modern computer.
