    Werner von Siemens is born

    The German engineer Werner von Siemens was born near Hanover. He discovered the dynamo principle, the trick that lets a machine generate large amounts of electricity, and helped turn electric power from a laboratory curiosity into an industry. The unit of electrical conductance, the siemens, is named for him.
