    The first human heart transplant

    Surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the first human-to-human heart transplant in Cape Town, South Africa. It proved the once-unthinkable was possible and began a new era of transplant medicine.

    The first close-up images of Jupiter

    NASA's Pioneer 10 flew past Jupiter and sent home the first close-up pictures of the giant planet. It was humanity's first visitor to the outer solar system.
