    The first antiseptic surgery

    Surgeon Joseph Lister used carbolic acid to keep a wound clean during an operation, pioneering antiseptic surgery. Killing germs turned surgery from a gamble into a reliable cure.

    The first communications satellite reflects a signal

    NASA launched Echo 1, a giant reflective balloon in orbit that bounced radio signals between distant points on Earth. It was NASA's first successful step toward satellite communication.
