    The first international wildlife treaty is signed

    The United States, Britain, Japan, and Russia signed the North Pacific Fur Seal Convention, halting open-water seal hunting to save a collapsing population. It was the first treaty to protect wildlife across borders.

    The Opportunity rover launches for Mars

    NASA launched the Opportunity rover toward Mars on a mission planned to last 90 days. It ended up exploring the red planet for nearly 15 years, far outliving every expectation.
