Maria Goeppert Mayer is born
Maria Goeppert Mayer was born in what is now Poland. She worked out why atomic nuclei are especially stable at certain magic numbers of particles, building the shell model of the nucleus. In 1963 she became the second woman ever to win the Nobel Prize in Physics, after Marie Curie sixty years before.
