    Lincoln patents a way to lift boats

    Long before the White House, Abraham Lincoln was granted a patent for a system of inflatable chambers to lift riverboats over shoals. It was never built, and he remains the only U.S. president ever to hold a patent. He had worked river boats in his youth and never lost his tinkerer's eye.
