The world's first postage stamp goes on sale
Britain issued the Penny Black, the first adhesive postage stamp, letting anyone send a letter anywhere in the country for a single penny paid by the sender rather than the receiver. It made reliable mail affordable for ordinary people and set the pattern every postal service still follows.
