Joseph Lister is born
Joseph Lister was born in England. Realizing that unseen germs, not bad air, were killing patients after surgery, he began cleaning wounds, hands, and instruments with carbolic acid. Deaths from infection fell sharply, and he is remembered as the father of antiseptic surgery.
