    The first call from a handheld phone

    Standing on a Manhattan sidewalk, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper lifted a brick-sized prototype and called a rival researcher to tell him it was coming from a truly portable phone. That call pointed the way to the mobile phones now carried in nearly every pocket.
