Ida Noddack is born
The German chemist Ida Noddack was born on this day. She helped discover the element rhenium, and in 1934 she was the first to suggest that a bombarded atomic nucleus might split into smaller pieces, the idea we now call nuclear fission. It took the field years to catch up to her.
