At a meeting of the Geological Society of London, William Buckland described and named Megalosaurus, the first dinosaur ever given a scientific name. It opened the long human effort to understand the giant animals that once walked the Earth.

Aboard the Friendship 7 capsule, John Glenn became the first American to circle the Earth, making three orbits in under five hours. His flight lifted a whole country and put the United States firmly into the contest to explore space.
