The first synthetic plastic is announced
The chemist Leo Baekeland announced Bakelite, the first fully synthetic plastic, a hard material that could be molded into any shape and would not melt back. It went into telephones, radios, and switches, and opened the age of cheap, moldable materials the modern world is built from.
