    The first global treaty to protect wetlands

    Delegates meeting in the town of Ramsar, on the Caspian coast of Iran, adopted a convention to conserve the world's marshes, lakes, and coastal wetlands. It was among the earliest international agreements to protect nature, and February 2 is now marked as World Wetlands Day.
