    Galileo finds moons circling Jupiter

    Turning his new telescope toward Jupiter, Galileo Galilei noted several points of light that proved to be the planet's largest moons. Here were worlds plainly orbiting something other than Earth, powerful evidence for a Sun-centered cosmos.
